Board of Directors Meeting Minutes: October 18, 2022

  3. Read the Nasha Shkola Mission and Vision
    Mission: Nasha Shkola aspires to be a multi-cultural charter school committed to exceptional education in all areas of academic inquiry with an emphasis on Russian Language and Culture, providing structured and responsive learning environment based upon educational best practices for all students and their families.
    Vision: To be an academically rigorous school preparing students for continued success as motivated learners and global citizens.

      1. Executive Director Report
        • Enrollment is at 100 students. 3 more students may potentially enroll in the next week or so with two of those students being middle schoolers.
        • “Picture Day” was last week.
        • Fall Conferences took place on Friday, October 14th. Families were given the option of meeting in-person or online. Most families opted for online meetings.
        • “Information Night” was held prior to Fall Conferences. Meetings were held online with the exception of two meetings which were held in-person. One of the in-person meetings was for the newly arrived immigrant families and the other was for meeting with school specialists.
        • Assessment reports MCA/NWEA reports will be mailed/sent to families.
        • The final item that needs to be addressed per the Fire Inspection report are the strobe lights.
        • The current strobe lights are not compatible with the old security system. LSS will work to install new strobes during the MEA weekend.
        • The boiler had a malfunction on Friday, October 14th. The landlord worked to repair the issue, however, it is not completely fixed. The landlord will work to fully repair the boiler.
        • Staffing update: no major updates yet; we are continuing to look for an office secretary in addition to other positions.
      2. Financial Report – September 2022
        • Fund 01
          • As of September 30, 2022 the school has received in Fund 01 a total of $331,092 of current Fiscal Year State, Federal and Local revenues which is 17% of its current budgeted amount.
          • As of September 30, 2022 the school has expended in Fund 01 $394,025 which is 21% of its current budgeted expense.
          • Nasha Shkola ended September 2022 with a current fiscal year to date Fund 01 deficit balance (revenues received less expenditures incurred) of ($62,933).
        • Fund 02
          • As of September 30, 2022 the school has received in Fund 02 a total of $685 of current Fiscal Year State, Federal, and Local revenues which is 1% of its current budgeted amount.
          • As of September 30, 2022 the school has expended in Fund 02 $10,645 which is 16% of its current budgeted expense.
          • Nasha Shkola ended September 2022 with a current fiscal year to date Fund 02 deficit balance (revenues received less expenditures incurred) of ($9,961).
        • Nasha Shkola had a total cash balance of $365,483 at the end of September 2022 reflected across all funds.
        • Nasha Shkola had a balance of $45,986 in accounts receivable at September 30, 2022.
        • There was a balance of $23,973 in current liabilities for general accounts payable and payroll liabilities at September 30, 2022. A portion of the liability is for payroll withholdings on the last day of the month which are not paid until the first days of the next month, thus they are reflected on the current balance sheet.
        • Nasha Shkola had an overall audited fund balance of $505,979 at June 30, 2022 which includes its investments in fixed assets.
        • The Adopted Budget Approved is based on 130 ADM or 135 pupil units. State aid is being paid on 135 ADM or 141 Pupil Unit.

  6. Old Business
    1. School Budget adjustment
    2. Lease aid status
      • The Fire Marshall Report has signed off on the Fire Inspection report and contacted MDE in regards to Lease Aid approval.
      • We are looking to receive a “Certificate of Occupation” letter from the city of Golden Valley. Once we receive this letter, we will be able to apply for Lease Aid.
      • The Lease Aid application is due on November 1st. Director Hardcopf will proceed with the application to not miss the deadline.
    3. Board members: background check
      • Background checks are part of a governance requirement
      • We may require background checks every three years.
      • Background checks would be completed for volunteers who work frequently with students in a small group setting.
  7. New Business
    1. Review and update board policies: Chapter 5 (5.4.1-5.4.4)
      Policy 5.4.1 Prohibition Against Unfair Discriminatory Practices in Education and Grievance Procedures

    2. Contract renewal with IQS
      • Our contract with IQS will need to be renewed by the end of the school year.
      • We are hoping to receive a 5-year contract.
    3. Advisory committee: Strategic planning & future development of educational programs
      • We are looking to form a committee of 5 to 6 members.
      • Two board members (Lydia and Alexej) would like to be the initial committee members

    The Nasha Shkola Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30PM.
    The Finance Committee meets at 5:30PM prior to the board meeting.
