Board of Directors Meeting Minutes: December 19, 2017

  3. Read the Nasha Shkola Mission and Vision – Paul Kinsley
    Vision:
    To be an academically rigorous school preparing students for the world.
    Mission: Nasha Shkola will be a multi-cultural charter school committed to academic excellence, provide a highly-structured learning environment based upon education best practices for students interested in the Russian language and culture, achieved through the collaborative efforts of parents, staff, and the communities we serve.

    1. Executive Director report
      1. Enrollment-115
        • Our school has added a few students. We have an enrollment of 121 but are currently paid on 115 from the state.
      2. School improvement (Yelena Hardcopf)
        • We are on track with our improvement plan with MDE
        • Our school is continuing PLC’s in math and language arts.
        • The school is looking into restructuring our interventions in reading.
        • The board asked some questions about testing.
        • The school will be conducting winter MAP tests in January, ACCESS in February, and MCA tests in April.
      3. Marketing Committee Report (Yelena Kurdyumova)
        • Yelena is continuing to talk to people in the community about our school including speaking to Russian language students at Concordia
        • The board discussed marketing opportunities and made some suggestions including looking for volunteers for our school.
        • Alexej updated the board on the placement of flyers at NW Rhythmic Gymnastics. Flyers have been taken.
        • The board talked about the placement of a sign identifying our school near the church sign in ways that would comply with Brooklyn Park laws on signage.
        • The school could have 15 to 18 inches above the church sign that could be lit at night.
        • The estimated cost is approximately $5,000 and could be paid though our rent payments.
    2. Financial Report
      1. Monthly Financial Report, Mark Eilers – Treasurer
        • The school has deficit of $8,610 for Food Service Fund 02.
        • The school has not been paid $1,160 for school lunches from families and staff.
        • The school has deficit of $14,285 for General Fund 01.
        • Audited fund balance of $63,791
      2. Account Balance
        • As of December 19, 2017, the school had an account balance of $38,435.20.
      3. Transfer of Line of Credit
        • On November 30, we received $52,000.
        • The school will pay down the money borrowed as more revenue come in from the state due to higher student counts.
      4. Report on MDE count adjustment and expectation of payment.
        • $80,000 in extra funds at the end of June 2018 because of the growth in our student count from 115 to 121.

    1. Strategic Plan revision and update (Yelena Hardcopf)
      • The board and teachers met to discuss the mission and vision.
      • Changes were made and the new working version was present to staff.
      • The teachers liked it.
      • The board had questions about the wording and choice of words.
    2. Update: School transportation: advertising costs and other concerns.
      • The signs have been placed on the buses at a cost of $586 down from $785.
    3. Policy Development and Revision
      • The board discussed the progress of policy and revision.
    4. Wellness Policy revision (Alexej Abyzov)
      •  The board discussed the treatment of sweets and candy.
      • Alexej said the Wellness committee was nearly finished
    5. Conflict of Interest policy (New)
      • The board discussed the conflict of interest policy.
    6. Whistleblower policy (New)
      • The board discussed the policy.
    7. Early Enrollment Policy revision
      • The board discussed the policy and the requirements for enrollment in kindergarten.
  8. New Business
    1. Program Development Opportunities
      • Yelena Hardcopf talked about the need to pursue growth by adding preschool, after school programs, summer camp, ESL for adults, and other ways to grow our school.
      • The school would pursue each new program in a careful and planned way to ensure success.
      • The addition of programs will add to the school’s reputation and act as a form of advertising for school as more people have contact with us.
        The school needs to have a long-term vision.
    2. Preschool
      • The board discussed adding preschool as the first step to expansion of programs at our school
    3. The board entered closed meeting at 8:40pm and Christian Schmidt left the meeting.
      • Closed meeting: Discussion on teacher salary increases.

The Nasha Shkola Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30
The finance Committee meets at 5:30 prior to the board meeting.
