Board of Directors Meeting Minutes: January 17, 2023

  3. Read the Nasha Shkola Mission and Vision
    Mission: Nasha Shkola aspires to be a multi-cultural charter school committed to exceptional education in all areas of academic inquiry with an emphasis on Russian Language and Culture, providing structured and responsive learning environment based upon educational best practices for all students and their families.
    Vision: To be an academically rigorous school preparing students for continued success as motivated learners and global citizens.

      1. Executive Director Report
        • Operations update: On December 22nd, a number of windows have been replaced in the building. The landlord hired a local company that replaced broken glass, but not hardware. Some windows continue to be inoperable due to non-functional hardware.
        • The director has informed the landlord and the lawyers of continual heating issues related to temperature control
        • The landlord has asked for about $11,000 in operating costs. School administration has asked for detailed documentation for the operational costs. On January 10th, the landlord responded with attachments of various invoices and information that they are using to justify the costs. The school’s lawyers are reviewing this matter and will dispute it as necessary.
        • The landlord has new legal representation.
        • There have been three snow days. One in December and two in January. As a result, the school calendar may need to be modified to add two more school days in April.
        • After School Tutoring will start on Tuesday, January 24th, which will be the first day of Quarter 3. Tutoring services will be provided Tuesdays – Thursdays 4:00pm – 4:45pm free of charge.
        • Grades K – 5 had Curiosity Fair this month.
        • 9 students have signed up for Kangaroo math. The competition day will be in mid-March.
        • A similar in-school math competition opportunity may be offered to students who did not participate in Kangaroo Math.
      2. Financial Report – December 2022
        • Fund 01
          • As of December 31, 2022 the school has received in Fund 01 a total of $810,797 of current Fiscal Year State, Federal, and Local revenues which is 41% of its current budgeted amount.
          • As of December 31, 2022 the school has expended in Fund 01 $821,945 which is 43% of its current budgeted expense.
          • Nasha Shkola ended December 2022 with a current fiscal year to date Fund 01 deficit balance (revenues received less expenditures incurred) of ($11,148).
        • Fund 02
          • As of December 31, 2022 the school has received in Fund 02 a total of $3,241 of current Fiscal Year State, Federal, and Local revenues which is 5% of its current budgeted amount.
          • As of December 31, 2022 the school has expended in Fund 02 $26,779 which is 39% of its current budgeted expense.
          • Nasha Shkola ended December 2022 with a current fiscal year to date Fund 02 deficit balance (revenues received less expenditures incurred) of ($23,538).
        • Nasha Shkola had a total cash balance of $468,977 at the end of December 2022 reflected across all funds.
        • Nasha Shkola had a balance of $6,283 in accounts receivable at December 31, 2022.
        • There was a balance of $47,199 in current liabilities for general accounts payable and payroll liabilities at December 31, 2022. A portion of the liability is for payroll withholdings on the last day of the month which are not paid until the first days of the next month, thus they are reflected on the current balance sheet.
        • Nasha Shkola had an overall audited fund balance of $505,979 at June 30, 2022 which includes its investments in fixed assets.
        • The Adopted Budget Approved is based on 130 ADM or 135 Pupil Units. State aid is being paid on 135 ADM or 141 Pupil Unit. Current enrollment is 95 ADM or 97.5 Pupil Unit.

    1. Future development of prekindergarten program

    3. Annual meeting and recruiting new board members
      • Election day will be on the last day of school, June 8th.
      • The Board Member application deadline is May 8th
      • The Board Development Committee needs to approve candidates prior to the May 16th board meeting.
        • Lydia Tonoyan will be joining the Board Development Committee.
          • Responsibilities will include reviewing candidate applications and conducting interviews.
    4. Personnel Committee:
      • Director review evaluation will include staff input to create stronger transparency between staff and board.
      • Staff evaluations will be anonymous and sent directly to Peter Keller for review.
        • The Personnel Committee will work on a complete set of questions that the board will review and approve.
        • Staff will complete a separate evaluation form.
        • Nicole Nelson and Alexej Abyzov will join Peter Keller in the Personnel Committee.
