  4. Open Forum for members of the public wishing to address the board:
    Parents of Nasha Shkola students and the teachers of Nasha Shkola Middle School expressed their concerns regarding the vote to postpone opening a ninth grade for the 2015-2016 school year as decided at the March board meeting.
  5. Reports
    1. Co-Chairs Executive Report – Yelena Hardcopf
      1. Annual meeting and recruitment of new board members.
        Annual meeting will be held on Friday June 5th 2015 at 9am. There are currently 3 open positions for the board and 1 candidate.
    2. Director report – Jake Nelson
      1. Enrollment: 130 Students
      2. Student achievement
        Students will be taking the MCA Exams on Monday April 20th. This will consist of 2 weeks of testing in grades 3-8. NWEA testing begins on Monday May 4th. Kindergarten did testing through AIMS Web.
      3. Leadership implementation team/SIG grant
        The LIT team will receive training on learning targets later in April.
        SIG Grant: The director provided information on the SIG grant. The deadline for filing is Tuesday April 21, 2015. The director answered questions about the grant from the board.
      4. Curriculum
      5. Staff update
        All staff observations have been completed.
    3. Financial Report
      1. Monthly Finance Report by Kara Gaffy and Sher Tischner, BDKA
        Sher Tischner from BKDA was unable to attend. Director Nelson gave the board the finance report. The director reported that the school was paying less for transportation and that lunch payments are currently positive. Other parts of the school are also “steady.” The school was also approved for a $60,000 loan for school operations during May, Jun, and July.
      2. Federal CSP Grant Report – Jake Nelson
        The school must spend the remaining 18-19 thousand dollars of the CSP Grant by the middle of May and the dollars have been dedicated to supplies and curriculum.

  7. Old Business
    1. Nasha Shkola 2015-2016 programming
      1. Overall enrollment projections
        The school has received the confirmation from parents of 104 students for the 2015-2016 school year. 15 students will be new. 13 students are a maybe on coming next year. 14 applications were mailed but not returned. 3 students will not return next year.
      2. Pre-K partnership with New Horizons update.
        Site visit is scheduled on May 5, 2015 to discuss the further development of the partnership with New Horizon.
      3. High school follow-up
        The board discussed options for providing a high school education to 9th graders. Options discussed included the following:
        A hybrid online and in class high school could supplement courses not offered but required by the state. This would require students to be dedicated, organized and have easy access to computers or tablets.
        A partnership with Eagle Ridge Academy was discussed. The potential positives and negatives of such a partnership were discussed by the board. Director Nelson reported his findings based on observations from a site visit and meeting with administration at Eagle Ridge.
    2. Website update
      The website is in its final stages of development. It will be completed by the end of June.
  8. New Business
    1. Draft of the 2015-2016 budget
      1. Set date for working budget session
        The board decided on Tuesday April 28th at 6pm for the working budget meeting.

      Motion approving Director Nelson to assign job duties to Nasha Shkola staff for accessing MN Department of Education secure website.

The Nasha Shkola Board meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30

The Finance Committee of the Board meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at 5:30

NS Annual Board vote and meeting –June 5th, 2015, 9 am

Action items for May meeting:

  1. Parents should be contacted to help build the raised bed vegetable garden for the school.
  2. The board needs to set up a meeting with Fairy Tale Academy to schedule an initial visit.
  3. The director needs to meet with the Eagle Ridge director to discuss the cost and scheduling for a partnership.
  4. A teacher and parent meeting at Eagle Ridge should be scheduled.
  5. Provide photos and text for the website
