5th-8th Grade Science

Arhely BermudezAbout 5-8 Science Program

5th Grade Science

In 5th grade science students get a taste of each of the 3 different major topics they will be covering in grades 6-8. We will be discussing topics in Life Science concerning animal and plant structures and ecological systems. In the Physical Science part of the curriculum we will be investigating motion and simple machines. We will also be spending time this year on Earth Science, discussing Earth’s structure and weathering processes as well as spending some time on minerals, renewable and non-renewable energy, and the effect of humans on the planet.

6th Grade Science

In 6th grade science we will be focusing on the broad category of physical science which is a combination of chemistry and physics. We will be covering topics such as elements, the periodic table, what makes a solution, and how matter is conserved in chemical reactions. We will be talking about Newton and his 3 Laws of Motion, energy and in its many forms and how it can be converted, as well some basic engineering practices.

7th Grade Science

In 7th grade science we will be focusing on the broad topic of Life Science. We will be covering topics such as how life began on Earth, the cell (including structure, cell energy, transport, and division), DNA and genetics, evolution, taxonomy (how things are named), and ecology.

8th Grade Science

In 8th grade science we will be focusing on the broad topic of Earth and Space Science. We will be covering the structure of the Earth, processes on Earth (including continental movement/drift, earthquakes, and volcanoes), types of rock, weather (including movement of air and water), our solar system, and phases of the moon.

Wellness

5th Grade

Wellness will be a once a week class for students. In 5th grade we will be using a more general format, discussing nutrition, how to keep our bodies healthy, some basics on body systems (respiratory and circulatory), and puberty (separate boys and girls).

6th Grade

Wellness will be a once a week class for students. In 6th grade we will be focusing on nutrition, drawing heavily on the non-fiction book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. We spend time on the major types of macromolecules (lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates), human nutrition, the food industry, and ethics.

7th and 8th Grade

Wellness will be a once a week class for students. In 7th and 8th grade we will be focusing on body systems, fulfilling the middle school science standards on the large topic. We will cover the circulatory and respiratory systems, the digestive system, and the immune system. I will add other systems as time allows, allowing for students to choose other systems of interest.
